Jiezhong Batik workshop
Jiezhong Batik workshop is located in Paibi Village, Shuanglong Town, Huayuan County, Xiangxi. It has a construction area of 800 square meters. It was founded by Mr. Shi Jiezhong, a master of batik. It integrates the manual production and product display of intangible cultural heritage, the training classroom of batik for the disabled, the manual training studio, the canteen, the hostel for teacher and students.
Batik Master Shi Jiezhong
Shi Jiezhong is the inheritor of the eighth Xiangxi batik technique. On the basis of inheriting traditional technique, he innovatively combined batik with Miao embroidery to form his own unique batik style. In the 2011 National Dyeing and Weaving Competition, Shi Jiezhong made batik on site and won the first award in the batik group. In the 2013 National Batik Competition, two works were awarded, and four works were collected by the Central Academy of Fine Arts.
When Shi Jiezhong was young, he was disabled in legs and feet due to polio, which made him empathize with all kinds of difficulties encountered in the life of the disabled. After he had ability and got rich, he created Huayuan County Chenhui Rehabilitation Co., Ltd., helping the disabled in surrounding villages and towns with batik entrepreneurship. The batik products were sold at home and abroad. Therefore, he was awarded by the Hunan Disabled Federation and the Hunan Poverty Alleviation Office as the most beautiful rich leader in 2018.
Disabled Batik Employment Training Base
Jiezhong Batik workshop is also the Miao batik intangible cultural heritage school. It has received teachers and students from the United States, Hong Kong, Beijing, Guangzhou, Xiamen, and batik enthusiasts to participate in the batik intangible cultural heritage experience. It organized long-term free training courses for the disabled, helping them with batik entrepreneurship, promoting the development of local economy.
Jiezhong Batik Workshop was awarded the " Provincial Demonstration Base of the 13th FiveYear Sunshine Poverty Alleviation for the Disabled” by Hunan Disabled Persons' Federation in 2020, and awarded the "Cultural and Creative Industry Base of China Disabled Persons' Federation” by the general office of China Disabled Persons ' Federation in 2021, it is an important partner of Xiangxi Global Geopark.
What is batik ？
Batik is both an art and a craft, it is a method of producing colored designs on textiles by dyeing them. To make a batik, selected areas of the cloth are blocked out by drawing hot wax over them, and the cloth is then dyed. The parts covered in wax resist the dye and remain the original colour. This process of waxing and dyeing can be repeated to create more elaborate and colourful designs.
After the final dyeing the wax is removed and the cloth is ready for wearing or showing.
