Dalong Cave Waterfall
Dalong (literally meaning giant dragon) Cave Waterfall is located in Buchou Township, Huayuan County, Hunan Province, at the edge of Heku Platform and southern side of Dalong Cave Canyon. This cave suspended waterfall was formed by surface water when it infiltrated downward vertically and fell across marlite in Chefu Formation. The water flow was then changed into horizontal movement and underground river caves were gradually formed. In the later period, due to rapid uplift of earth’s crust with neotectonic movement, downward incision of Donghe River and headwater erosion, the trunks of underground rivers were exposed onto the steep cliffs and the water fell down the cliffs like a fan (Photo 4-60). The waterfall has a drop of 214m and overflow width of about 88m. The small pool formed with flooded water is less than 3m deep, and collapsed stones can be found beside the pool. Its maximum water flow during the wet season is calculated to be 798 L/s.
