Xiangxi Global Geopark Brings Summer Science Program to Local Library
Designed for primary school students, the program moved beyond traditional classroom lectures by combining lively presentations, specimen displays, and hands-on activities. This interactive approach made geoscience knowledge accessible, engaging, and easy to understand.
During the event, staff introduced the distinctive geological features of Xiangxi, explaining the geopark’s major geo-sites, the scientific significance of the Guzhangian GSSP ("Golden Spike"), the unique landforms of Red Stone Forest, and the geological processes behind the formation of canyons and karst caves. Complex geological concepts were also presented in an enjoyable and age-appropriate way.
The event attracted enthusiastic participation from the children. Staff displayed a variety of rock and fossil specimens, allowing the children to examine the specimens up close while listening to science popularization talks. The children eagerly asked questions, took part in quizzes, and shared their observations, gaining a firsthand appreciation of Xiangxi's hundreds of millions of years of geological history through immersive learning.
The event also included public education on the Regulations on the Protection of Xiangxi Global Geopark, encouraging children to develop an awareness of protecting geoheritage and safeguarding the region’s natural landscapes.
Going forward, Xiangxi Global Geopark will continue to fulfill its science popularization mission by improving educational content, developing innovative outreach activities, and expanding public engagement platforms. Regular science popularization programs will continue in libraries, schools, and communities, helping tell the geological story of Xiangxi, inspire young people's interest in earth science, and fully leverage the geopark’s educational role in science and ecological conservation, while supporting the high-quality development of geoscience education and ecotourism sectors across Xiangxi.
